This time we will be looking at how Fuji and Sony cameras perform with their standard zooms. I our comparison we will be using mid-tier cameras (Fujifilm X-T20 and Sony A7II) with their respective mid-tier zooms, the full names of which are Fujinon XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS and Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70 mm F4 ZA OSS respectively.
Why those two lenses, you might ask? They are very different from each other, one has variable and the other constant aperture, the focal range is also a bit different.
Of course the Sony lens is wider at the lower end, at 24mm as compared to Fuji’s 18, which gives us about 27-28mm equivalent. This has to make it bigger, so you might say that the better comparison would be the Sony 28-70 variable aprerture zoom (SEL2870) which indeed is smaller and more close in size to Fujifilm XF 18-55, it is however a terrible lens that is swamped by chromatic aberration at anything above base ISO, so it really wouldn’t be fair to Fuji, given how good the 18-55 actually is.
So, you would have to compare the 28-70 to Fujinon 16-50, which would prabably be the most fair comparison. If you go up, you might say than I should compare the Sony-Zeiss SEL2470Z with Fuji’s 16-55 F2.8, given the fact that here we would have more simmilar focal ranges and depth of field. This comparison would in turn not be fair to Sony, because the Fuji 16-55 is a pro lens through and through, which would make it a comparison for the Sony’s pro SEL2470GM (G master), which woulf fare better, if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s much heavier, larger and 2 times more expensive.
Probably the comparison I would most likely want to see is the Fujifilm XF 16-55 F2.8 versus Sony 24-105 F4 (SEL24105G) lens (similar price, weight and size, same filter diameter), which I someday hope to make, budget willing.
The real reason I chose those two is of course the fact that I had those, I think however that my ‘choice’ can be justified because these are the middle range, affordable and fairly compact and therefore the go to lenses for people who want a ‘standard’ standard zoom for both systems.
In all, I think that the Fuji system is really on par with the Sony in the standard zoom regard. In my previous test I was using the Sony 70-200 F4 telephoto and it really helped Sony win against the X-T20 + Fujinon XF 55-200 combo (albeit by a small margin), here however I think that the IQ advantage of the 18-55 lens over the 24-70 F4 is so large, that even the Sony’s large full frame sensor cannot help it win this round. This is my opinion, in order for you to make yours, I post some photos below, a few out of camera JPEGs first and then the RAWs processed in Lightroom. Enjoy
